In My Diaper Bag with Susie Fougerousse

Rosenberry Rooms owner and mother of 5 kids ranging in age from 14 to 1, Susie Fougerousse knows all about how to stay prepared on the go. Today she is sharing the top 10 things she keeps in her diaper bag (including her favorite bag) that she can’t live without. The list includes essentials for both her and the kids that help keep them happy and her sane.

1. The Germinator Hand Sanitizer – This hand sanitizer is safe for little hands and doesn’t dry out your skin.

2. Hard Headband with Yellow Geranium – My three year old is obsessed with headbands, so I keep a spare on hand.

3. Griffin Survivor Extreme-Duty iPhone Case – I drop my phone at least once a day, and every so often it falls in a puddle, so this is a must.

4. Starbucks – I can’t start my day without iced coffee.  If I have the time in the morning, I make my own at home so I can skip the drive-thru.

5. Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color…..for days when I’m feeling extra pale.  Bobbi Brown Blue Raspberry is the best.

6. Tambour Bird Rattle and Octavio Bird Rattle - Bird rattles from blabla – soft, sweet and portable.

7. Cosmopolitan Carry All in Key Lime Cream Cake – I love alliteration, and I really love this bag.  I think it speaks for itself!

8. Dreamer Swaddle Wrap 4-pack – I love these soft, lightweight blankets – I always keep one on hand.

9. In My Tree by Sara Gillingham – My 1 year old likes to play with this book – and I love the illustrations by Lorena Siminovich.

10. Purple Coach Sunglasses - I can’t live (or see) without these glasses.  Mine are prescription, and they sure are pretty.

Meet Gemma Booker of Child Style Magazine!

Child Style Magazine is known as the trend magazine of the children’s fashion and juvenile industry. Creator Gemma Booker, loves to feature the best in children’s products as well as one on one interviews with popular designers in the industry. We’ve turned the mic around and decided to interview Gemma this time! Check out her answers below as she tells us what inspired her to create Child Style as well as some of her most memorable features.

What inspired you to create your own magazine?

I created Child Style Magazine in 2009 after owning my own boutique for 4 years and then designing for many well-known brand and manufacturing companies. I realized that there was a major need in the market place for a B2B publication that not only gave information but captured the latest fashions and was fun to read, something that had an emotional side and shared stories about moms following their dreams and creating successful businesses. I also realized that a large percentage of baby businesses are started on a shoe string and most companies are not social media experts. Social media is very important to a small growing business but can seem like a full time job. We have developed a marketing program that includes print advertising, online magazine, PR, direct mail, & social media at one low affordable price because to have successful marketing and create a true buzz for your brand, you need all of these things happening at the same time. Our formula is amazing and it works.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

The most rewarding part of each day is when I get to pick my kids up from school instead of having to put them in daycare. They were in childcare since they were born and the last 3 years have been a blessing.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

Believe in yourself! We all have to make sacrifices and choices and we always question if what we are doing is right or wrong. The truth is you love your kids, they love you and as long as you give them what they need when they need it and spend quality time with them and stay consistent, that’s all that really matters in the end. Life is full of changes and ups and downs. I believe that if handled properly, having two working parents in today’s society is hard as heck but will teach your children valuable lessons about work ethic, life and reality. The best thing I ever did for myself was make a huge chart on our wall so I don’t forget things and can manage our time better.

What is your most memorable feature story?

I would have to say Petunia Pickle Bottoms 10th anniversary. I purchased one of her first bags she sewed herself made out of cotton poplin and it had these puffy handles. When she started the Asian brocade trend in 1999, I carried the bags in my store. I have a soft spot for the company because they came from nothing and become very successful.

If you could interview anyone in the world, who would it be?

That’s a hard one for sure. I love talking to the little guy and I love seeing how I can interject with ideas and knowledge. Most the big guys I can read about or they have written a memoir. I would love to sit down with Oprah one day girlfriend to girlfriend, have a cup of tea and just talk about how it was in the beginning when she must have been having sleepless night after sleepless night, about what decisions to make and see how every one of them has panned out to be amazing!

What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?

My girlfriend owned a showroom in LA, runs 3 successful lines, and has 4 kids. Her youngest child just had to have his spine operated on. He is only 5 and will be laid up in a body cast for months. Her strength for her family and her ability to balance not only what we do as career woman and mothers but the unseen is nothing less than inspirational to me.

Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?

Alaska – We took an amazing trip to Alaska it is so green and beautiful. We went white water rafting and I have to say it was some of the most fun I have had in a long time.

Where in the world are you dying to go next?

I am absolutely dying to see the sulfur lakes in Turkey or spend the week in St. Lucia doing nothing but I have been planning that trip for 5 years now. LOL

What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?

I love Rosenberry Rooms with a passion because they are local to me and it’s another success story changed many times over the years. I love Stanley and Bratt Décor. I love the frilly lamps and cute rugs. No matter if I was designing a room for my kids or for a celebrity’s home, I could find what I am looking for at

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?

We are launching a new company in September called Gutsy Girls Club living fearlessly since 2010. This is an amazing club for women and little ladies to get in touch with finding themselves again, overcoming parts of our lives that have dragged us down, remembering our dreams and finding our truth so we can live the lives we were meant to. I developed the idea after my husband passed away in 2009 and that was the beginning of a downward spiral emotionally for my family. I developed curriculum that could help any person going through something hard focus on the good every day and use these tools to turn around any situation and not be afraid to live the fullest most gratifying life possible, by learning what the lies are and replacing them with truths. We teach lessons through art and provide support through our Gutsy Girl Peers. Our first 5 day Life Art Life camp is being held in October and I can’t wait to share this life changing experience with women everywhere because following your dreams and overcoming the lies and hard times in your life, takes Guts.

Diaper Bags that Don’t Disappoint

We’ve all heard the horror stories about how horrendous the selection of baby and children’s products were “back in the day.” Depending on the age ranges of your children, you may have even experienced this first hand; I know I have. There is a 13-year range between my oldest and youngest, and the innovation in design both from a functional and aesthetic standpoint during that time has been incredible. So, when my first child was born, it seemed like the only option was to buy products lined with teddy bears and tacky tropical fish. It was frustrating not only because these products didn’t enhance or even blend with my personal style, but because they seemed to be designed to make it look as if you were living in a Disney movie.

Wow, have we come a long way! In my opinion one of the most striking improvements has been in the diaper bag industry.  Instead of trying to hide your diaper bag at the bottom of the stroller, you can now tote your bag around town with pride, even when the baby is at home. Half of the time, you can’t even tell that a mom is carrying a diaper bag, because it is so stylish.  Aside from looking fabulous, here are the five most notable innovations and functional features that diaper bags now have to offer.

Antimicrobial Fabrics

Say good-bye to crumbs and germs! Did you ever imagine that a diaper bag could be designed with a waterproof lining and a special antimicrobial treatment to kill germs, mildew, fungus and bacteria?  Well, the fantastic designers over at Ju-Ju-Be have done just that. Not only do their diaper bags have the coolest prints around, but they also boast innovative ways to keep your diaper bag clean. As most moms know, a diaper bag can turn into a giant mess in no time with all of the snacks and drinks that get toted around on a daily basis. Another great feature found in most Ju-Ju-Be bags are “crumb drains”, which are tiny openings at the bottom of the bag making it easy to brush out unwanted crumbs without having to remove everything and vacuum it out.

Insulated Bottle Pockets

I love this feature. Instead of dealing with packing a separate cooler inside of your diaper back to keep milk and formula at the right temperature, many diaper bags now feature bottle pockets that are insulated, which are also perfect for sippy cups. StorkSak has done a wonderful job with this! They have designed zippered bottle pockets that are easily accessible on the outside edges of their bags, so you don’t have to dig though your whole diaper bag. I have used the Emily Diaper Bag countless times for long trips because of the ease of grabbing and stowing cups, and it doesn’t hurt that the exterior is wipe-able, either!

Stroller Attachments

When you are out on the town or walking in the park, being able to attach your diaper bag to your stroller is key to allowing you to keep your hands free to take care of the baby or push the stroller. Thankfully, this essential feature is becoming more and more common. Typically the diaper bag strap is either long enough to stretch over both handles of the stroller, or your diaper bag will come equipped with detachable stroller straps designed to attach to the stroller handles. This feature is an absolute must! A great example of this is the Marilyn Bag by Timi & Leslie, which actually has both!

Gender Neutral Designs with Dads in Mind

One of the most important developments in the diaper bag world has been a new focus on the needs of fathers. Your husband may not be a stay-at-home dad, but he will likely still want to have a baby bag that he feels comfortable carrying when travelling or running errands with the kids. There are many styles that are meant to transition easily between men and women, and others that are distinctly designed with men in mind.  Diaper Dude is a brand that has become a favorite of celebrity parents, because they make cool diaper bags to please both moms and dads. They also boast key organizational features like a cell phone pocket and pacifier and key clips.

Built In Changing Stations

Most moms would prefer to avoid changing diapers in public, but we also know that isn’t realistic. So, it’s important to find a diaper bag that will make this process as smooth as possible. I am a big fan of the built-in changing station feature. Petunia Pickle Bottom is often touted as the perfect combination of form, function and fashion. The Boxy Backpack is a great example of this because in addition to the roomy and easy to carry design, the built-in changing station with roll out & detachable changing pad is a feature that you can’t live without.

Stroll on over to to find the diaper bag design that is right for you!
