Hi, I’m Shari! I’m a SAHM of 2, wife of an amazing guy I met at a Las Vegas bar almost 10 years ago, & lover of red beets & brussel sprouts. I write a Mama/Baby blog called Spearmintbaby.com.
What inspired you to be a blogger/designer/DIY-er?
I started blogging back in 2008 when I became pregnant with my first child. My first blog was really just about my pregnancy and the only people that read it were family members and close friends. After my daughter (Harper’s) birth the blog really just became a bunch of random photos of her everyday. I was pretty bored with it. I still loved blogging but I wanted to talk about more than just myself, hubby, and daughter!
Once I became a mom, this whole new interesting world opened up. I became fascinated with baby products, children’s decor/design, & fashion… so, in 2009 (when Harper was about 4 months old) I decided to start Spearmintbaby.com. My goal was to create an online community through Spearmint Baby for pregnant women & brand new moms. I also really wanted to turn this into some kind of a business. I thought it would be a dream come true to be able to make some money through blogging while doing what I’d always wanted to do…be a stay-at-home-mom! (& I was pretty determined to make that happen) I worked day and night- often 12 hrs/day trying to promote my blog, create content, and growth. Nowadays I am able to help support my family, send my kids to preschool, & even save for their college educations! & I LOVE MY JOB!
What is your favorite part of your daily work…when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
My favorite part of the day is checking my inbox each morning. I receive emails from women all over the world. It is funny how you begin to develop relationships with moms you have never even met. I love the community I am part of through my blog. I also get to work with so many fun/interesting children’s brands! Checking my mailbox and front door for product samples is part of my daily routine. I am lucky to have the opportunity to check out so many products that I would otherwise have never known about!
Do you have any advice for other working moms?
I really haven’t mastered the working mom thing. Since I work from home it is extremely difficult to balance work & mom time. I work 24/7 so it is difficult for me to completely put everything down. I try to spend quality time with my kids after camp or school. I find the best thing for me is to hide my computer away so that I am not tempted. This is not easy for me! Now that the kids have started back at preschool (as of August 7th) it is much easier for me to work all morning/early afternoon, then spend time with them during the afternoon. After getting the kids to bed & having dinner with my husband, I resume work around 7:30 P.M. Often I work until midnight!
I think all working moms struggle with the same issues….work/mom balance. Perhaps someone could give me some advice!
What is your most memorable Design Project/Craft
My favorite activity of the moment is sewing. My goal in 2013 was to take a sewing class. I signed up for Jo ann Fabrics Sewing 101 last spring. I had done some sewing in my 6th & 7th grade Home Ec classes and LOVED it but really hadn’t done much in the past 22 years! I couldn’t remember how to thread the machine or wind the bobbin. After the sewing class (& several YouTube sewing videos) I completed my first sewing project: My DIY Kitty Cat. Ever since finishing her, I’ve been hooked!
I also love arts and crafts, baking, painting, & anything involving Washi Tape.
If you could decorate a room for anyone, who would it be?
I really don’t consider myself much of a decorator, but I am OBSESSED with children’s bedroom decor. I guess it is the child inside me that still wants to have a room with playful accessories and a closet full of beautifully illustrated books! My favorite room to decorate would definitely be for a newborn baby. I am currently decorating a shared bedroom for my 3 & 4 year olds and that is really fun too. Since I have a boy & a girl I am going with shades of primary colors. See a peek here:
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
My family made a cross country move at the end of May. We relocated from southern NJ to Scottsdale, AZ. I have to say that it has been life changing. My husband used to commute 4 hours/day into Manhattan and we barely saw each other. He is now working about 30 minutes from the house and it is fantastic. Our lifestyle is soooo much better.
In addition, I am completely energized by the southwest. I am loving the dry heat of summer and beauty of our new surroundings. We’ve met so many interesting people here and although I am one that prefers to change it up every few years, I honestly feel like I want to live here forever! Every day my husband & I remind each other how lucky we are to be living in such an amazing city!
Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
There are so many favorites, traveling/exploring is my FAVORITE hobby. One trip that stands out is the trip to Iceland that my husband & I took a few months before tying the knot. For 8 days we camped & stayed in little cabins as we road tripped around the entire ring road of Iceland. The beauty and isolation of the county was breathtaking and invigorating!
Where in the world are you dying to go next?
I still haven’t made it to Alaska. I’ve been dying to go– must be all of those Nat Geo Alaska programs! Now that we are back on the west coast hopefully we’ll get there! I also have this dream trip all planned out that goes through Eastern Europe and ends in St. Petersburg!
What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?
Definitely the furniture selection! I LOVE the selection of modern cribs and children’s beds. Have you seen the Vetro Crib? WOWZA!!! & I am currently working on a shared bedroom for my own kids and purchased the Perch Bunk Bed in White & Birch. I cannot wait to get it put together!
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?
YES! We are working on an e-commerce store called SpearmintLOVE.com. It has been a dream for me and it is finally happening! Stay tuned for more details. It is set to launch right after Labor Day weekend!
Now, just for fun:
I love to eat. Some of my favorites include super spicy Thai Food (Pad Thai, Green Curry Chicken, Spring Rolls), Chipotle Burritos, Sushi, my hubby’s Margaritas & Salmon Burgers, Crab Legs with a bowl of hot butter…. I could go on and on!!
Favorite TV Show
Probably The Amazing Race. I think it satisfies my adventurous side since travel happens very infrequently while raising little ones!
I don’t have a favorite movie. I do like history a LOT so anything by PBS American Experience is just perfect for a Saturday night! One of my recent favorites was Dolley Madison. She was an extremely sharp woman and way ahead of her time in regards to what women were thought to be able to contribute to society at that time.
Favorite Weekend Activity
I enjoy going to the local produce markets, art shows, & flea markets. I also love just sitting outside and drinking home made margaritas (my husband makes the best margaritas you’ve ever tasted) while my kids play in the sand box. Browsing real estate is also one of my favorite things. Now that we are living in Arizona, one of my favorite Sunday activities is driving around town and checking out the open houses!
A few of my faves include: CCR, Tom Petty, Journey, REO Speedwagon, & Snoop Dog,
