Best Friends For Frosting is your source for all things DESSERT! Party Stylist, Dessert Expert and passionate blogger, Melissa Johnson shares recipes, dessert styling tips, photography, interviews, dessert products and much more. I had the pleasure of interviewing Melissa to find out more about what got her started, her favorite recipes and of course see some pictures of her beautiful desserts!
What inspired you to become a dessert stylist and ultimately to found, Best Friends for Frosting?
Before I launched Best Friends For Frosting, I worked at three different bakeries to gain experience with hopes of learning how to run my own bakery. After working in the bakery industry for three years, I decided that creative freedom far outweighed making a profit. I was determined to find a way to continue to work in the dessert industry while inspiring others with my passion for dessert. Within months, I launched Best Friends For Frosting, a website about all things dessert. All the desserts that I’ve featured on Best Friends For Frosting are ideas or recipes I would have featured in the bakery I once dreamed of opening.
Interacting with other people who love dessert just as much as I do. Whether it’s talking to our readers or chatting with bloggers, I have such a ball. I have to admit, I love the social media aspect of blogging. I have such a blast on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.
When you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
One of the most rewarding feelings is knowing that I have inspired other people.
Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Balance & organization is key. I have countless spreadsheets and “to do” lists, and I make sure to get things done in a timely manner. If anything, bust out the “to do” list in order or importance. I promise it makes a huge difference. I was lost before I made a commitment to do that regularly.
What is your most memorable recipe or dessert styling project?
I recently had an incredible opportunity to style 14 desserts for Sprinkles & Grins, a website produced by Betty Crocker & Cake Mate. They sent me 80 pounds of sprinkles & frostings and allowed me to unleash my creativity — it was wild! They housed a separate website for the project and turned it into a Back to School Bake-Off competition. They had me recruit multiple bloggers for the competition and also sent them their own frostings and sprinkles to create one dessert to promote the contest. I got to co-judge all the entries with their team. It was a lot of fun!
Absolutely positively Oprah Winfrey! She is such a wonderful and uplifting person. It would be such an honor to do something uplifting for her.
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
I just wrapped up a one week online course with Masin Kipp of The Daily Love. The class was called “Actualizing Your Soul’s Goals.” It was all about setting your goals and intentions from the right place. I had so many valuable realizations that I learned from that class. I can’t wait to apply them to Best Friends For Frosting, so stay tuned! =)
Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
I just love Southern California, which is funny because I live in Northern California. They have a fabulous dessert scene, and there is such a calmness about being at the beach and digging your toes into the sand. I promise I am not quoting “Semi-Charmed Life” lyrics.
Where in the world are you dying to go next?
Disneyland!!! My son is 2, and he has never been there yet. I can’t wait to see the excitement and joy Disneyland brings to him.
What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?
Of course the Birthday Cake Play Set! I also love the Baby Cakes Dream Blanket in Fairies and Cupcakes by aden + anais (no surprise, there!) and the Paris Flea Market Single Wall Sconce is simply beautiful.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?
I have a lot of plans on expanding Best Friends For Frosting in the works right now. I am one of those people who keeps my lips sealed until it literally happens. But please keep in touch with us on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Instagram. Once I can reveal, I will put every last detail throughout all these social networks.
Now, just for fun:
Favorite Food: Would you believe me if I told you I eat cake for breakfast? Just kidding! Lately I have been obsessed with Indian and Thai Food. My husband can make a mean red curry sauce!
Favorite TV Show: Parenthood
Favorite Movie: Practically any Hallmark Movie. My mom and I are obsessed. We DVR the movies and then call each other and talk about them.
Favorite Weekend Activity: I’m a simple gal! I just love family time with my husband and son. We like to go grab coffee and hot chocolate at Peet’s and walk around the park, especially in the fall when the leaves turn orange and brown and they make the perfect crunch when you step on them. ‘Tis the season!
Favorite Musician/Band: I like anything from Kelly Clarkson to Sheryl Crow to Santigold.
