Meet Jessica of Modern Moments Designs!

Wife, mother and self-proclaimed cupcake addict by day and designer/party stylist by night, Jessica Wilcox of Modern Moments Designs sure knows how to do it all. She even tells us her little secret but you’ll have to keep reading to find out. What’s most exciting about this post is that not only does Jessica share with us some of her adorable kid’s party designs and gorgeous event styling, but she also shares pictures from her beautiful nursery for her brand new baby girl, Kennedy. Interior designer, too?? Yep. Don’t just take my word for it, check out her photos below and be sure to visit her blog at ModernMomentsDesigns.com where you will see more of her most popular parties, some even featured on HWTM, and visit her Etsy shop where you can find the goods to create your own stylish events, all with a Modern Moments touch!

What inspired you to become a party stylist and designer and ultimately to found Modern Moments Custom Designs?

It all started when I was pregnant with our second son. I had insomnia and I would sit up late at night and design birth announcements for him before he was even born. It was the only quiet activity I could think of at 3 am. From there, it snowballed into Halloween cards, birthday invitations, etc. My friends encouraged me to start selling my designs and I took the plunge and opened an Etsy shop. At that time, I had no idea where it would take me. I started following several blogs and saw creative parties popping up all over the internet. My creative and uber competitive nature kicked in and I said, “I can do that.” A few years and several kids later, here I am.

What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

My favorite part of what I do is designing. I love coming up with new party themes and ideas. If I could just sit and design all day, I would. At some point, I would love to have someone else be in charge of my current collections so I could work full time on designing new collections. At the end of the day, I am so thankful that I can stay home and work. It definitely isn’t easy working at home with four kids 7 and under, but at least I am home with them and doing what I love.

Do you have any advice for other working moms?

People always ask me how I get so much done. I’m going to let you in on a big secret, but you can’t tell anyone. Are you ready? I stay in my pajamas or sweats most of the day. True story. I find that if I don’t spend time doing my hair and makeup and picking out the perfect outfit, I can get way more accomplished.

Are you ready for my other dirty secret? Though I love a really clean house, actually having one is a whole different story! My house tends to be messy, not dirty, and usually there are several baskets of laundry that need to be folded or a sink full of dishes. I’ve finally realized that I can’t do it all and since I don’t get paid to do the dishes, I’d rather spend my time working. I’ve taken the approach that they will get done eventually, but are not the most important thing on my mile long “To do List” each day. For all of you other working Moms out there, you have to make some concessions and you can’t do everything. Do what’s important to you and do the rest later or hire someone to do the things that you don’t like, such as cleaning. Everything else can wait!

What is your most memorable design project?

All of my designs are so different and evoke different emotions. Since all of my projects tend to be for my children or friends, they are all really personal to me. I’d say my Rockstar and Chevron collections have been among the most popular. My personal favorite has to be my recent baby shower for our daughter Kennedy. I finally had the chance to design something very feminine and girly. I love how it turned out.

If you could style a party or create a design for anyone in the world, who would it be?

I’ve never thought about designing for someone specific. However, my favorite type of person to design for is people who are creative and obsessed with all the little details that make a party extra special. If I had to pick someone to design for that was famous, I’d definitely love to design an event with Lauren Conrad because I love her style. I’m sure we could come up with something glamorous and beautiful.

What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?

I’m always inspired by different things. Sometimes it’s a specific color palette, other times it’s an article of clothing or maybe a pattern I’ve seen. Inspiration comes from everywhere. I always know that I have a good idea when it keeps me up at night.

Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?

What is this traveling you speak of? Hahaha. We have four small children and the most frequently traveled place at our house is the grocery store. We honestly don’t get out much, but recently my husband and I took our kids to Newport, Oregon. It was so much fun because it was just our little family and no one else. I love hanging out with my husband and our children. We always have the best time together.

Where in the world are you dying to go next?

That’s a tough question because I really haven’t traveled much. There are several places that are on my wish list and each for different reasons. I’d love to go to Italy, Australia, and Thailand.

What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?

I’m in love with so many of the products featured on Rosenberry Rooms.

Just a few of my favorites include the Sweet Dreams Round Chandelier Medallion, Cosmopolitan Carryall Diaper Bag in the Berry Chiffon Cake by Petunia Pickle Bottom, and the amazing Filigree Pale Pink Mirror.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?

I’m super excited to share with you my daughter’s nursery. It was so fun to finally design a girly nursery! I’ve spent the past few months working on it and I am sure it will always be a work in progress. Other upcoming events include three of my son’s birthday parties. This year they have selected a fire truck theme, Angry Birds, and a Paul Frank bike themed party. They should all be super fun!

Now, just for fun:

Favorite Food – Hands down, cupcakes!

Favorite TV Show- Any reality shows, but I love Grimm, The Good Wife, Revenge, and anything I can watch from 8pm – 2am while I work.

Favorite Movie – The 80’s classics like Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, and Footloose

Favorite Weekend Activity – Watching my kids play sports

Favorite Musician/Band – We have Bieber Fever at our house right now!
