Being a mom doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style. You can still be stylish and comfortable (my fave combo) and on-the-go! Melanie Knopke, style expert, and the beauty and brains behind Scout – A Mom’s Guide to Stylish Living, knows all about this and has made a career out of helping Moms find their individual style and feel great! Melanie is also a design expert for Project Nursery, offering fashion tips on the latest trends in maternity style, Mommy must-haves and more. We asked Melanie if she would tell us a little bit more about what inspired her to create Your Style Scout as well as some of her favorite fashion trends for fall!
I started my blog in 2008 after I had my first child. I decided to quit my job as a clothing buyer after I had my son, but I was desperately missing a creative outlet and most of all, the fashion world! So, I decided to start a blog where I could share all the things I love the most…fashion, beauty, travel and of course great items for kids.
I love being a SAHM, but I missed working. I wanted to find some way that I could do both. Styling and writing has been the perfect career as I can still be at home with my kids but fit in styling appointments here and there.
What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
I think the most rewarding part of my work is that I have found that balance between being a mom and having a career that I love.
Do you have any advice for other fashion conscious moms?
I think that quality over quantity is the best advice I could give. Invest in pieces that will stand the test of time and buy a few trendy items each season to freshen up what is currently in your wardrobe.
A classic pea coat is on my wish list for fall…here it is perfectly styled by Blair of Atlantic-Pacific blog.
Lots of pattern mixing for fall and colored denim is returning! Also, love the “arm party” going on here…
What is your most memorable styling or project?
I am currently styling fashion segments on multiple news stations in Kansas City. It’s quite a thrill to style models and to be on live television! It’s the chance of a lifetime, and I am having a blast with it.
If you could style anyone in the world, who would it be?
This is a great question. Honestly, I would love to get my hands on some of the Real Housewives! (mostly New Jersey and OC). The women on the show are really beautiful, but their looks need to be toned down. They would benefit from more classic styles from stores like J.Crew or Diane Von Furstenberg.
I will be easing into fall with maxi skirts and tanks and then layering them with leather as it starts to get cooler…
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
I recently attended an event at the Madewell store that just opened in Kansas City. I love the overall feel and style of the store. It’s sort of like J.Crew with an edge. The way they style their mannequins and even how the girls were all dressed was really inspiring. It’s an eclectic way of dressing, and I love that.
Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
My husband and I went to Mustique on our honeymoon. It’s a very tiny island in the Grenadines (A favorite of Royals…The Middleton’s frequent there!). It’s breathtaking and so private; you feel like you are in another world.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Well, in 5 years I will be 40. I hope by then that my styling business has expanded and I would love to continue writing for local publications.
What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming projects or events?
With fall just around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about your wardrobe and what you will need for next season. I am taking appointments for personal shopping or closet consultations now. If you live in Kansas City, email me at Melanie@stylespies.com.
Still loving sequins for day or night!
It’s all about colorful jewels for fall, like these beauties from Kendra Scott.
