What inspired you to become a stylist and ultimately to found cupcakeMAG?
It was always a dream, but never in the plans. Right out of high school, I began nursing school which I attended for 2 years. When I was doing clinicals inside one of the best shock trauma center in the US, I realized, I was entirely too sensitive for this job. I was crying every 2 minutes. Not that Fashion is better if you don’t have tough skin but I realized, it wasn’t my passion. A week later, I decided I NEEDED to get my Bachelors in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in journalsim and so I enrolled in Academy of Art University, out of San Francisco. I haven’t turned back since!
Since I can remember, I have loved fashion. I was reading Seventeen and Vogue by 10, sketching designs and just consumed with all things fashion. Styling is something I love – whether it’s an outfit, a party or inside the home – it’s what makes me smile.
What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
I love it when I can feel someones excitement through an email – it’s like you can almost see them smiling. I love watching a small little shop we featured on cupcakeMAG turn into something HUGE. I love it when one of our clients gets a hand written thank you from a celebrity after we’ve gifted them. I love it when I know I have helped someone get over a hurdle when it comes to running their own business and making them believe again. I love it when I style a client and you can immediately see their self esteem rise above. I love how after a shoot, when it’s a wrap, you can take a deep breath and take it all in. At the end of the day, as stressful as my job is – it’s demanding, and 24/7, there are no office hours – it has amazing rewards and I have connected with amazing people along the way. You feel a sense of accomplishment and know, your job is so worth everything else in between.
Do you have any advice for other working moms?
I get one line all the time, “You’re Super Mom! How do you do it?” Hey, YOU can do it too! Just the other day I saw a quote on Pinterest, “Dreams don’t work unless you do.” It is so true. You have to give it your all and if that means only getting a few hours’ sleep before an 8am meeting – well, you will sleep one day! Work on time management and staying organized.
But remember; take time for your family. Give yourself a day off. The work will always be there when you return but one day, your family will grow up and you won’t have every day with them. It’s important to make sure you are giving time to yourself too! And as always, follow your heart and go for your passion.
What is your most memorable interview or styling project?
The work I do for The Party Dress magazine have been some of my favorite styling projects. However, my most memorable interview – this is a hard one, I will have to say is Steven Tyler tied with Bravo TV star, Caroline Manzo. Caroline decided to have me call her on a Sunday, which happened to be Memorial Day weekend and asked me why I was working – she was the best! She was attending a family BBQ and proceeded to ask them questions out loud to help her answer. I just adore her so much! As for Steven, well – words can’t explain how awesome of an interview it was! He rocks!
If you could style anyone in the world, who would it be?
Can I bring back Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn? They are two of my favorite ladies of all time. But, if I had to style someone tomorrow, I would say Tori Spelling. She is one of my favorite Hollywood leading ladies and has been so supportive to cupcakeMAG. She is someone I know I could have fun with!
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
Everything on Pinterest! I wish I could do everything I pin in a week. I just can’t get enough and every time I get a chance to browse, I get inspired. From a pretty outfit, lots of baubles, to a oh-so-stylish room or a recipe I am drooling over – I am constantly inspired with the boards I’ve created. Follow me: http://pinterest.com/cupcakemag/
