Child Style Magazine is known as the trend magazine of the children’s fashion and juvenile industry. Creator Gemma Booker, loves to feature the best in children’s products as well as one on one interviews with popular designers in the industry. We’ve turned the mic around and decided to interview Gemma this time! Check out her answers below as she tells us what inspired her to create Child Style as well as some of her most memorable features.
What inspired you to create your own magazine?
I created Child Style Magazine in 2009 after owning my own boutique for 4 years and then designing for many well-known brand and manufacturing companies. I realized that there was a major need in the market place for a B2B publication that not only gave information but captured the latest fashions and was fun to read, something that had an emotional side and shared stories about moms following their dreams and creating successful businesses. I also realized that a large percentage of baby businesses are started on a shoe string and most companies are not social media experts. Social media is very important to a small growing business but can seem like a full time job. We have developed a marketing program that includes print advertising, online magazine, PR, direct mail, & social media at one low affordable price because to have successful marketing and create a true buzz for your brand, you need all of these things happening at the same time. Our formula is amazing and it works.
What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
The most rewarding part of each day is when I get to pick my kids up from school instead of having to put them in daycare. They were in childcare since they were born and the last 3 years have been a blessing.
Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Believe in yourself! We all have to make sacrifices and choices and we always question if what we are doing is right or wrong. The truth is you love your kids, they love you and as long as you give them what they need when they need it and spend quality time with them and stay consistent, that’s all that really matters in the end. Life is full of changes and ups and downs. I believe that if handled properly, having two working parents in today’s society is hard as heck but will teach your children valuable lessons about work ethic, life and reality. The best thing I ever did for myself was make a huge chart on our wall so I don’t forget things and can manage our time better.
What is your most memorable feature story?
I would have to say Petunia Pickle Bottoms 10th anniversary. I purchased one of her first bags she sewed herself made out of cotton poplin and it had these puffy handles. When she started the Asian brocade trend in 1999, I carried the bags in my store. I have a soft spot for the company because they came from nothing and become very successful.
If you could interview anyone in the world, who would it be?
That’s a hard one for sure. I love talking to the little guy and I love seeing how I can interject with ideas and knowledge. Most the big guys I can read about or they have written a memoir. I would love to sit down with Oprah one day girlfriend to girlfriend, have a cup of tea and just talk about how it was in the beginning when she must have been having sleepless night after sleepless night, about what decisions to make and see how every one of them has panned out to be amazing!
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
My girlfriend owned a showroom in LA, runs 3 successful lines, and has 4 kids. Her youngest child just had to have his spine operated on. He is only 5 and will be laid up in a body cast for months. Her strength for her family and her ability to balance not only what we do as career woman and mothers but the unseen is nothing less than inspirational to me.
Where is your favorite place you have traveled to?
Alaska – We took an amazing trip to Alaska it is so green and beautiful. We went white water rafting and I have to say it was some of the most fun I have had in a long time.
Where in the world are you dying to go next?
I am absolutely dying to see the sulfur lakes in Turkey or spend the week in St. Lucia doing nothing but I have been planning that trip for 5 years now. LOL
What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?
I love Rosenberry Rooms with a passion because they are local to me and it’s another success story changed many times over the years. I love Stanley and Bratt Décor. I love the frilly lamps and cute rugs. No matter if I was designing a room for my kids or for a celebrity’s home, I could find what I am looking for at RosenberryRooms.com.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?
We are launching a new company in September called Gutsy Girls Club living fearlessly since 2010. This is an amazing club for women and little ladies to get in touch with finding themselves again, overcoming parts of our lives that have dragged us down, remembering our dreams and finding our truth so we can live the lives we were meant to. I developed the idea after my husband passed away in 2009 and that was the beginning of a downward spiral emotionally for my family. I developed curriculum that could help any person going through something hard focus on the good every day and use these tools to turn around any situation and not be afraid to live the fullest most gratifying life possible, by learning what the lies are and replacing them with truths. We teach lessons through art and provide support through our Gutsy Girl Peers. Our first 5 day Life Art Life camp is being held in October and I can’t wait to share this life changing experience with women everywhere because following your dreams and overcoming the lies and hard times in your life, takes Guts.
