Party Stylist & Cupcake Designer Lynlee Beckett doesn’t need much of an introduction because her gorgeous designs do the talking! She started Lynlee’s Petite Cakes in 2010 but has been creating cakes for parties and celebrations since she was 12, learning a lot from her father. As a former Accessories Buyer, she understands the importance of focusing on the details, the added accessories that kick things up a notch whether it’s a stylish outfit or a creative cupcake topper! Below are just SOME of Lynlee’s amazing creations and I hope you will read her story because the love she has for this career she’s made for herself is contagious and her designs are both awe-inspiring and mouth-watering!
While growing up, my father was always in charge of making cakes for the family celebrations with the classic Wilton character pans, ranging from clowns to dinosaurs to Bugs Bunny! When I was around 12, he passed the torch onto me and I was in charge of all parties and celebrations from then on, but it remained a hobby for quite some time. My career as an Accessories Buyer in the Fashion industry began shortly upon graduation from the University of California Berkeley, where I double-majored in French and Dramatic Arts, and lasted approximately 10 years. In the meantime, my love of parties and cake/cupcake decorating only grew stronger as my daughter, Anabelle, was born and planning her birthdays became almost an obsession! With all the amazing talent found in the party world, I was inspired to kick it up a notch by tackling my fear of fondant to make 3D horses for Anabelle’s cowgirl-themed third birthday party last year. It was at that point that I knew the passion I had for parties and cupcake decorating had to be translated into my career. Whether I was going to school, going to work or just going out, my father always told me to “have fun” and not only is my new career fulfilling, but man, is it fun!
What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
My absolute favorite in both party planning and fondant designing is when an idea in my when actually comes to fruition and I’m so happy with the results! It’s so fun to be inspired and have this creative outlet and it’s a thrill when it all comes together perfectly, which isn’t always the case! I also adore hearing from happy customers. I really am so lucky to do what I love while being a part of celebrations in people’s lives. It just doesn’t get better that!
Do you have any advice for other working moms?
Balancing my work and home life can be very difficult! I continue to search for that balance on a daily basis, especially when starting a business and when it seems that the work is never-ending! But ultimately, my family is my absolute priority and making time for them is a choice I make. Knowing your limits is also extremely important to avoid over-extending yourself. Ultimately, having the support of your family and friends is invaluable, as I could not do what I do without their support and help!
What is the most memorable party design project?
It’s a hard choice, but I would have to say that my daughter’s fourth birthday party this year has been my most memorable so far. It was inspired by both the classic story of Peter Pan and the movie “Finding Neverland” and centered around the word “Believe”, which is exactly what I wanted the birthday girl and her guests (young and old) to do. From listening to stories to dressing up to playing, it was everything a party and ultimately memories should possess.
If you could style a party for anyone in the world, who would it be?
While thinking of famous people or those that I admire for whom I would want to style a party, I always come back to children and most notably, my daughter. I try to personalize my work as much as possible and look for clues as to what details I could add that makes the focal guest feel special. The excitement of children when their favorite themes and characters are turned into reality is truly priceless, especially when they have their cupcake picked out from the beginning of the party! It’s like a wish come true!
What thing/place/event were you most recently inspired by?
I am inspired everyday! Sometimes the inspiration comes from customers and their party invitations or decor and my peers… sometimes it comes from magazines, catalogs or the internet… and sometimes it comes personalities and memories. My most recent party was inspired by Pan Am, the new television show based on the iconic airline and reminiscence of when my mother worked for the company during my childhood.
Where is your favorite place you have travelled to?
I have been very fortunate in my travels, as I grew up in São Paulo, Brazil, while my mother worked for an airline, which provided many opportunities to see the world (including meeting Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates on a trip to Australia)! While living in Lyon, France, as I studied abroad in college, I was also able to visit some amazing countries in Europe, such as Italy, Spain, Germany and Greece. I’ve also been able to enjoy some amazing beaches, such as those in Tahiti and the Virgin Islands. All of this to say: how could I possibly choose?! Though, I think you can tell from my branding and website that I have a special place in my heart for all things Parisian (not to mention the theme of my wedding and my daughter’s first birthday party)!
Where in the world are you dying to go next?
I have yet to visit Asia and being half Chinese, I would love to find out more about my ancestry. I also have yet to visit the continent of Africa!
What is your favorite Rosenberry Rooms product(s)?
As a former Accessories Buyer, I would have to say that my love of Handbags is still prevalent in my life and therefore, the Rosenberry Rooms’ diaper bag section is my fave! Again, so hard to choose, but I can say that the brands I’m loving are Timi and Leslie, Mia Bossi and Petunia Pickle Bottom. I love all the fashionable new styles and bodies available now and after having my daughter, I have been drawn to “cross-bodies” for the accessibility and functionality, especially when having to run after children!
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming events or projects?
I recently opened my Etsy shop and have been so happy with the reaction from customers and fans! Also, I am so excited about the re-launch of my blog, which is still a work-in-progress! I am going to be focusing on updating it more frequently to not only provide a showcase for my parties and fondant work, but to take it further to offer more inspiration and tutorials to help readers create projects of their own. There are just so many creative and talented people out in the world that might be a bit apprehensive to try new things (as was I) and hope I can help conquer some of these “fears” by sharing my own experiences, inclusive of both successes and failures! I no longer fear fondant (most of the time!) and nor should you!
Now, just for fun:
Pão de queijo ~ a Brazilian “cheese bread” that rules my world! If I am ever sick, I can always gauge the severity of my illness by asking myself if I could still eat it and if I can, a hospital trip is not necessary (not 100% full proof)!
Favorite TV Show
I am currently loving “Modern Family” and “Parenthood”, though I spend quite some time watching re-runs of “The Cosby Show”, “The Golden Girls” and “Cheers” these days (as you can see, I love the 80’s!). So much so that I fear I am scarring my daughter by one day having her friends think she is a visitor from the past as she quotes the Cosby’s and sings “thank you for being a friend”!
It’s a four-way tie between “French Kiss”, “Legends of the Fall” “Love Actually” and “Finding Neverland”.
Favorite Weekend Activity
Hands down ~ spending time with my family, especially during the holidays!
Juanes, Bon Jovi and Flight of the Conchords
