A beautiful piece of art is the most simple and quick way to liven up any child’s room or nursery. With so many children’s artists out there today, it can be pretty difficult to find the perfect art piece or pieces for your little one. Well today I am happy to introduce a wonderful artist of adorable, hand painted art that you are sure to love! Kelly B. Rightsell creates beautiful children’s art that is designed to bring a smile to your little one’s face and open up a world of imagination with dancing bunnies, leaping frogs, elephants and ducks at the same tea party and so much more! Kelly’s two major influences on her artwork have been her children and her love of animals and it sure shows in these delightful pieces! Each and every whimsical piece from her collection can be mixed and matched to make any child’s room a playful retreat! Now, it is my pleasure to introduce our interview with Kelly of Kelly B. Rightsell Designs!
Enjoy and be inspired!
I try to keep my style what I consider to be “classic”. I have always been drawn to vintage children’s books and designs that stand up over time.
What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
I was searching for artwork for my first child’s nursery and noticed there wasn’t much to choose from. I started selling original work to interior designers with some success. I knew of artists who sold artwork in a reproduction form for other rooms in the house, so I thought, why not for the nursery? I took several pieces to the Atlanta Gift show that were well-received and my business was born.
Why did you choose to design and make children’s art?
I have always loved children and children’s books. As a child I would draw from “The Little Golden Books” for practice. I was an elementary art teacher for years, so I was always around the children’s world. When I had children of my own, I became immersed in their world and creating art for them came naturally.
What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
I always keep a sketch book with me, especially in carpool lines. I jot down sketches for ideas and then go home to elaborate on them. It’s always fun when a new product sample comes to my door, or when I get a thoughtful comment from someone who has enjoyed something I’ve designed.
If you had to pick a favorite piece from your collection, what would it be?
One of my favorites is the “Mimi’s Tea Party” piece. I really loved the fabric design. It was inspired by real tea parties at my grandmother, “Mimi’s house” in S.C. My cousins and friends wore real vintage clothes (even my uncle’s Citadel hat) and ate off real silver settings in my grandmother’s yard, surrounded by camellias, azaleas, and yellow roses. It brings back many happy childhood memories.
What sets Kelly B. Rightsell Designs apart from other designers in your industry?
I think I was one of the first artists to really create art specifically for children’s rooms, then design coordinating fabric, wallpaper, rugs, bedding, etc. I know now there are lots of artist’s doing it. I also draw and paint by hand…no computer-generated imagery.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
I am always working on new things. I now sell originals and work on art for other rooms. I have a few new things in the works, so keep in touch. I am slowly attempting blogging on a daily basis..not easy since I am “technically-challenged”.
