If you are looking for something outstandingly unique and charming for your kid’s room or playroom, then Stray Dog Designs is the line for you! The whimsical feel is undeniable in these pieces by Jane Gray and although extremely unusual, they are absolutely extraordinary. I love how in her interview she says “Think Dr. Seuss,” because that perfectly describes this imaginative collection of children’s lighting and decor found on RosenberryRooms.com. These quirky, hand-painted pieces are a guaranteed hit among both children and parents. It is my pleasure to introduce Jane Gray of Stray Dog Designs, who tells us “don’t be afraid of quirky” as she describes how she came about this delightful collection and highlights some of her favorite pieces!
Enjoy and be quirky!
How would you define the Stray Dog Designs style philosophy?
Have fun with it. Be creative. “Glamorous” and “decorated “are great but be sure to incorporate your own personality or it will come off flat. Don’t be afraid of quirky.
What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
Mmmmm…I guess because I wasn’t particularly qualified for anything else….and was too stupid or naive to know that starting a business was a serious undertaking. I could and can draw and always enjoyed junk shopping and making things for my house and then when my husband, Billy, and I were on our honeymoon in Mexico we just sort of fell into it.
Why did you choose to design and make children’s lighting and décor?
That part of the line started when we had children, of course. Necessity is always the mother of invention, right? I designed a really cute daisy bed when I was pregnant with my first child (who turned out to be a boy.) And I find children’s books particularly inspiring….the illustrations are so vivid and fabulous….just think of Dr. Seuss….wouldn’t he have been an extra fun decorator?
What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is the most rewarding?
I really enjoy designing, especially when I am on a roll, or when I know that what I have just drawn is going to be flat out fabulous. I sometimes love an “arts and crafts” day…when I am working on a sample or creating a fun prop for the shows. It is always pretty satisfying to work with your hands AND be tickled with the results. Sometimes I answer the customer service calls and almost always enjoy chatting with our clients….we are lucky to have such delightful and charming customers.
If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
That is a tough question because I change my mind a lot ( I am a Gemini, after all) and I tend to love whatever is new. But, I do still love the Artichoke Lamp and I am very fond of the Mariana Floor Lamp….and we will be introducing a crunchberry table lamp this summer that I think is fairly divine.
What sets Stray Dog Designs apart from other lighting designers?
I think our designs are fairly uninhibited…..and you can see the “hand” in hand made.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
We will be introducing a “Mexican Glam” collection in our showrooms this summer. Think cactuses and agaves and fabulous embroidered fabrics. We will also be utilizing gold leaf on some of our lighting and accessories for the first time.
