P’kolino (pee-ko-lee-no) is an adorable line of kid-sized furniture known for its playful style and innovative functionality! Their motto “playfully smart” is so evident in their products because they are both youthful and fun for children but also very versatile and functional for parents. I can’t help but smile when I see the Silly Soft Seating or the delightful Tree Table with Zebra and Giraffe Chairs! All of P’kolino‘s products are sure to encourage hours of imaginative play for your child and their durability and eco-friendly design makes them both safe and practical. Today it is my pleasure to introduce the Chief Product Designer of P’kolino, Elizabeth Ganrude, as she passionately tells the story of her inspiration for this charming line of children’s furniture!
How would you define the P’kolino style philosophy?
Play! The act of play is such an important part of any child’s life that we try and provide the best play experience possible with our products. In essence our philosophy is to create playfully stylish and functionally smart products.
What inspired you to become a designer?
I’ve always been interested in how things work and how they’re made. It was a natural progression that I would start designing things myself. Of course it helped to have incredibly creative parents. I know not everyone grows up having a sewing and painting studio in their basement and a welding shop in their garage. I’m thankful I did because things like that introduced me to the creative process at an early age.
Why did you choose to design and make children’s furniture and accessories?
When I was a teenager, I was the babysitter that planned games and activities specifically for the kids ahead of time. Now as an adult, I still get enjoyment out of imagining what children would have the most fun doing. I also feel that children’s products tend to have very short lifespans. One of our goals at P’kolino is to produce products, such as the Toddler Bed, that have longer lifespans built in.
What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
When working on a new design, I can never get my brain to shutdown at the end of the work day. My mind keeps racing until I reach that moment of “duh, of course that’s how it should be”. Those “Ah-ha!” moments are always the most rewarding, when a design has come together to completion and I’m finally happy with it.
What sets P’kolino apart from other designers in your industry?
We design products that are fun and engage both children and adults. To do this, we put a lot of thought into both the functional and playful aspects of each product. Not only do we consider the aesthetics, but materials are also very important to us. Our use of wood and water based finishes create products that are safe and long lasting. We stay true to our Playfully Smart motto in that each design is inspired by play and contains unique functionality.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
We’re always working on something new, and we are going to be releasing a Little One’s Easel very soon. It’s a little smaller, but is a more manageable size and allows two children to play at once. The super cute style will fit in any play space!
