How would you define DadGear style philosophy?

The DadGear style philosophy is basically that we, as dads, have our own style and that it does not need to be sacrificed when shopping for gear to care for our children.  So much of the childcare industry is appropriately focused on mothers such that dads sometimes give up and just accept what is handed to them.  At DadGear, we believe that not only can the diaper bag be masculine and progressive in its design, it doesn’t even have to look like a diaper bag in the first place.  When we started designing our product line, one question we continuously asked ourselves was “since I am going to carry and use this bag, how do I want it to look and function?”  We did not take any existing design for a diaper bag and merely try to make it masculine.  We started from scratch with bag designs we were proud to carry and we made them function they way a diaper bag should.  We also recognize that dads, like anyone, vary in their taste.  As a result our bags range visually from traditional and conservative to graphically aggressive.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

Scott has always been an entrepreneur so the idea of starting a business to fit what we perceived as a need was not a big stretch.  The design part was less of a conscious decision and more just a natural part of the problem we were trying to solve.  We knew what it was about every diaper bag that we DIDN’T like, so we were able to focus our energy and attention to the attributes that we DID like.  From that standpoint, we were able to look at the design problem from a different angle and it ended up being a good fit.

Why did you choose to design and make diaper bags?

Scott was a new Father and I was about to start my own family.  We were discussing what we saw as a huge void in the childcare industry for products that catered to dads and what our needs and desires were from a style and functionality standpoint.  We knew that we certainly were not the only dads that felt that way.  Since we couldn’t find any diaper bags that fit what we wanted, we decided to make our own.

What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I would have to say the creativity.  Whether it’s designing new products, researching fashion trends or working with our graphic artists, the energy involved in the creative process is very exciting.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

For me, I would have to say the Diaper Vest™.  I love the fact that we were able to completely reinvent the diaper bag into a form that no one expected yet most agree is a natural implementation of the diaper bag concept.  If I were to hazard a guess for Scott I would say it is one of our more aggressive Graphic Series bags like the Skull and Flames bags.  It was his idea to venture into that more aggressive territory and it has been very successful for us.

What sets DadGear apart from other diaper bag brands?

Our bags are very non-traditional diaper bags in almost every sense of the word.

  • Look – None of our products look anything like a traditional diaper bag.  From the overall look and structure to the colorful graphics, they look like bags that guys would choose to carry (or wear) for any other purpose.
  • Functionality – Our bags were designed specifically to make caring for your kids easier – features like our patented Quick Access Wipes Container give our bags an ease of use that you just can’t find in any other diaper bag.
  • Quality – Our bags are made from high-quality materials and hardware, hand-stitched (mostly in the U.S.A.), and quality checked to our own rigid standards.  We stand by our products and have no interest in making cheap junk.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Always keep an eye out for new graphics and Billboard designs.  Our Billboard series bags go quickly as each of those bags are one-of-a-kind.
