How would you define Elizabeth Allen Atelier style philosophy?

Pretty doesn’t have to mean boring or romantic or syrupy sweet. I think everyone needs and deserves some prettiness in their life, which is why I use the same prints for girls, boys and adults and then use the details to personalize the look.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

I worked as a fashion editor and stylist for over a decade in Paris and New York City and grew weary of that industry. I had always loved (and hoarded) fabrics so I decided to sew up some pillows. I took them into ABC carpet and home (a legendary NYC home store), came out with my first order and started sewing.  I did not start with a plan– it just evolved and grew day by day and continues to do so.

Why did you choose to design and make children’s fabric and bedding?

Originally my collection consisted of pillows that I made with vintage textiles and 1930s and 40s juvenile cotton prints are more readily available and affordable than adult fabrics. Little by little I started collecting late 19th century French textiles and making sophisticated “grown up” pillows. When customers asked for linens that matched the look of the pillows, I segued into designing a full bedding line. I actually stopped doing a children’s collection for a bit because it was too much to handle, but I had to come back to it because I absolutely love kid’s stuff (especially for girls).  Everyone assumes I have kids because half my store is dedicated to products for them and I guess I do a good job of picking it out. As with everything, I do and buy only what I love.  I also design some girly dresses, hats, purses and bloomers just for the store, which are too adorable.

What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

It is very satisfying when a customer calls and gushes over their bedding and even more so when they call years later and want to order again because they still love it. I take that as proof of our great quality and also the timeless appeal of my prints. I have kept my business small and personal and the rewards are in keeping with the scale.

Favorite design from your collection- I particularly love the Honey Odile Crib Bedding

What sets Elizabeth Allen Atelier apart from other children’s bedding and fabric designers?

The uniqueness of the collection is due to my very particular taste. I like what I like, do what I like and don’t do what I don’t like, even if I know it would be salable.  My baby bedding has always been sophisticated (compared to many that are childish) because I use the same fabrics for the adult collection. I developed a palette of colors (pool, honey, berry etc.) from the beginning so that prints work with other prints regardless of when they were introduced.  Babies can transition into “big kid” bedding using the same colors, if not the same prints because I rarely discontinue them. It makes things a lot simpler.
