How would you define Alex Marshall Studio’s style philosophy?
Contemporary handmade—we try to make it evident that each piece is made by hand and that the glazing is done by hand, all while maintaining a contemporary form. You can see this in the brush strokes on the character designs or in the process of the silhouette designs, which is done by painting on a wax outline of the design that burns off in the firing process exposing the silhouette.
What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
I did ceramic sculpture as an undergraduate at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York and started making dinnerware and serving pieces for friends, which slowly grew into a business. As business progressed and the years passed, I introduced new designs including vases and lighting and then introduced the baby and kids’ designs. It’s been a slow and gradual pace and we’re proud to say we’re still a small, family run business that manufactures our ceramics in northern California.
Why did you choose to design and make children’s ceramic décor?
My husband/business partner and I had our first child three years ago and I started making her bowls and plates with animal designs to get her inspired to eat “people” food. After a little while we had one of those “aHa!” moments when we realized we can also personalize the pieces so they’re more individualized and special. Those designs turned out to be the first iteration of what became the first character designs. As the popularity of the dish sets grew we slowly expanded the product offering to include lamps, coin banks, picture frames and even apparel.
What is your favorite part of your daily work when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
Design is definitely the most rewarding aspect of my job but it’s also a small portion of it. When I reflect on my day, I always feel that I’m truly a lucky person that I get to make ceramics for a living from a studio on an olive orchard in northern California and I get to work with my husband who’s my business partner. You really can’t beat that and I wake up every day knowing it.
If you had to pick a favorite item from your collection, what would it be?
Right now, I’m loving our giraffe figure lamp. It’s really cute for a kids’ room but I’m thinking about putting one on my bedside table!
What sets Alex Marshall Studios collection apart from other children’s décor designers?
We consider our designs cute enough that a child will fall in love with them but also design-oriented enough that parents will fall in love with them. We also want the designs to be mature enough that a child will be able to grow with them.
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
We’re getting ready to launch a grey with an elephant, a sprout with a turtle and two new dot designs; character dots and silhouette dots. We’re also developing a line of holiday groupings.
