Meet DeNai Jones of Petunia Pickle Bottom

Petunia Pickle Bottom, oh how I love thee. Anyone who knows me is aware of this deep affection for the line that revolutionized the diaper bag industry. Whenever I show a friend or family member around our boutique I inevitably end up parading them by our selection of Petunia Pickle Bottom bags for an “ooh and ahh” session. My love affair begins with a tremendous respect for the stylish designs and the practical functionality. What really strikes me most about this line of baby bags is the great sensory impact that it achieves through texture and color. Take the Cake Collection as an example, which mixes delicious colors like buttercream and juniper berry with soft European cut velvet and tweed in a stunning floral damask pattern. If you aren’t hooked yet, check out the glazed canvas with hand embroidered accents, soft chenille and lustrous brocade fabrics used in the original collection! The Spring 2011 Collection brings two amazing prints that I’m torn between for my next diaper bag purchase. Always a sucker for anything orange, I’m loving the new Relaxing in Rio Moroccan pattern. I also love the pear green and Victorian blue combination in the Afternoon in Auckland print. I might just need to break down and splurge on one of each!

Needless to say, it is a huge honor to be featuring an interview with DeNai Jones, designer and owner of Petunia Pickle Bottom. Along with her partners, Braden Jones and Korie Conant, she has built an incredible brand with a knack for mixing fantasy and function. Petunia Pickle Bottom bags are products that customers can count on for consistent quality and original style!

How would you define the Petunia Pickle Bottom style philosophy?

A nod to vintage, pops of color, lots of layers, texture, paired with elegant sophistication.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

The arts were a part of my upbringing and I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t creating. My mind is wired to create and I’m always full of ideas. But the business wouldn’t have happened without the people around me. My husband Braden Jones, our CEO, is responsible for the risks we have taken as a company, and Korie Conant, our CMO, has been the mastermind behind the Petunia Pickle Bottom brand. The three ingredients have been the perfect recipe.

Why did you choose to design diaper bags?

I know this sounds cliché but in all honesty ten years ago there was not a single fashionable diaper bag on the market. The children’s industry consisted of pink and blue bears; the catch phrases “modern parenting” or “fashionable moms” were a new concept on the market and needed to be met. Thankfully we were there at the right time to meet the need before any other options were available.

Petunia Pickle Bottom is a very fashion forward company and certainly has changed the diaper bag world. I have always been struck by the beauty of the colors and patterns you use and of course by the gorgeous designs. How and where do you find your inspiration for your new collections?

I love all things vintage, travel, and texture. It’s a culmination of a tiny inspiration piece that evolves into something more once the creative process begins. Color theory is such an enjoyable part of the process that is influenced by fashion magazines, blogs, travel and nature.

The names of all of your bags are based on beautiful places around the globe. Does travel play an important role in the design process?

Yes, travel is a part of who I am and our brand story. I am given wonderful opportunities to see amazing cultures when traveling to our factories; however there are always more places you want to see than ever possible to attain, so we do a lot of “virtual travel” when researching places of inspiration for new collections—our bookmarks of travel destinations only seem to increase.

What is your favorite part of your daily work…when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

The amazing staff I am privileged to work with, being creative, and seeing an idea transform into a final product.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

That’s a hard choice, but there is one product that has been with us for ten years, the Boxy Backpack. It is still our best selling product and has helped to define “modern parenting”.

What sets Petunia Pickle Bottom apart from other diaper bag designers?

I believe it’s a culmination of things: Our brand story is very strong and translates throughout our entire product line, PPB’s proprietary fabric designs that change every season, our craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Our Facebook fans are instrumental in sharing what products they would like to see next, our Fall Collection has fulfilled some of those requests.
