Meet Mary Bauer of Bratt Décor

So many adjectives come to mind when I think of Bratt Décor. Beautiful, elegant, cool, sophisticated, opulent, modern and stylish, but the most prevalent one is original. Mary and Stephen Bauer have created what is arguably the most original baby and children’s furniture line on the market today. With equally impressive collections varying greatly in design, from luxurious to traditional and classic to modern, the common thread is a distinct and unique style. I have always been a huge fan of Bratt Décor and purchased the Sweet Jane Collection in lavender many years ago for my daughter. I am not alone in my admiration of everything Bratt! Along with adoring parents everywhere, Bratt Décor is a huge celebrity favorite. You may have seen the gorgeous Chelsea Collection in antique silver in Mario Lopez and Courtney Mazza’s nursery featured in US Weekly and on Lopez’s show Extra. Other famous Bratt Décor customers include Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum, Kourtney Kardashian, Halle Berry, Tori Spelling and Jennifer Lopez.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what designs Mary & Stephen Bauer have up their sleeves for future collections! Take a minute to check out the entire Bratt Décor nursery and kids room furniture selection on RosenberryRooms.com. Now here’s our interview with the wonderful president of Bratt Décor, Mary Bauer!

How would you define the Bratt Décor style philosophy?

Bratt Decor style is timeless, personal, original, and excellent. We believe that everyone has a personal style, and we try and create collections that speak to the broadest movements in design, be it contemporary, traditional, luxury, or classic design. Style is one way we communicate to the world who we are and what we love.

What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?

My husband, Stephen, and I started this business when I was pregnant with our first child, Sebastian. We just couldn’t find anything that spoke to our distinct sense of style. So, Stephen designed a crib, and that became the beginning of everything Bratt.

Why did you choose to design children’s furniture?

It was a choice born of necessity. When I was first pregnant, way back in 1995, choices were very limited. The idea of sophisticated design had not reached the nursery at that time.

What is your favorite part of your daily work…when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?

I love redefining our timeless designs in new photo shoots, pulling from what’s hot right now. It always amazes me how our designs, some of which have been around for 15 years, never go out of style. That, and working with the new mommies. I love that time in a woman’s life, and being able to share in it in our small way is such a gift.

If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?

It changes daily. Right now, I’m in love with the newest pieces, the Chelsea Lifetime Iron Crib. It’s stately and grand and converts to a full bed. I see Tuscan villas and Paris apartments when I look at that piece. When I’m in a different mood, Soho white with the loft eases my weary soul. It’s simple and pure and easy. But, I love them all.

What sets Bratt Décor apart from other children’s furniture designers?

Well, every single person is unique aren’t they? No two are ever alike. Bratt Décor is the combination of Stephen and myself and our life and love story. Our designs come from deep within us, from what takes our breath away as we move through this life. They are deeply personal. No one else can tell that story.

Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?

Currently, we’re working on a design book that will help parents define their style and then achieve it. It’s not really a book, but a variation on what was our catalogue. I hope everyone will find it really useful, and it will be a great source for those looking to create their own version of the perfect nursery.
