Simply put, I LOVE blabla. I love the colors, the designs, the quirky characters, the feel of the soft knits, and that special something that I can’t quite put my finger on that makes blabla so irresistible. Anything and everything blabla makes me smile. Over the years, I have acquired many blabla goodies as baby gifts for my family and friends, and among my favorites are Lulu, Wink, Violet, Tambour Bird Rattle and Mr. X Boogaloos.
It is a pleasure to be able to feature an interview with Florence Wetterwald, the designer and creative force behind blabla. I have always been so inspired by her creations, so it is such a treat to learn about what inspires her.
Blabla baby clothes and toys offer something for every little one, including backpacks, dolls, rattles, mobiles, and hats with matching booties. Take a look! I guarantee one or more of the stuffed toys are sure to steal your heart.
How would you define the blabla style philosophy?
When you enter our website, the first thing you read is “happiness fits in the palm of the hand,” that really summarizes it. I love the poetry of simplicity and the strength of authenticity, in life as much as in style.
What inspired you to become a designer and start a business?
I can’t remember “becoming” a designer, it feels like I have always created things, from the elaborate compositions with the food in my plate as a child, to the drawings of each object in my room on rainy weekends as a teenager . My mother was a fashion designer for knitwear in Paris, I grew up with threads and colors swatches laying around. She owned her own business. It made sense. I did not want to design for women though, that world always seemed a little too melodramatic.
Why did you choose to design children’s products?
I like the universe of children, it’s playful and tender and allows more freedom from a creative perspective.
What is your favorite part of your daily work … when you reflect on the day, what is most rewarding?
The energy I was able to create, by discussing, by designing and by listening is all about making a difference into somebody’s life. Whether it’s a child who loves those dolls, the knitter who can now afford a better house, or a sales person who realizes that she is an essential part of the happy puzzle….
If you had to pick a favorite design from your collection, what would it be?
I like Mc Nuttie, he is an orange squirrel with a fluffy tail, like the ones we have in France. He wears a very British plaid short which makes him ridiculously proper, he reminds me of my grandfather.
What sets blabla apart from other children’s toy and apparel designers?
I don’t really know, there are a lot of talented designers out there, I guess we all have our own story. Blabla’s story is about natural materials, ancient skills, and modern vision….A combination that’s is maybe not very common?
Do you have any news that you would like to share, perhaps about upcoming designs or introductions to your line?
I am trying to create a blabla paper world in which our dolls’ personalities and interests come to life. I am working with a Spanish illustrator, a free spirit, very much like us, I am excited…
